| “Break the Cycle Project” provides
financial assistance to established programs assisting young
children in Africa who are in some way affected by HIV/AIDS to
improve their start in life. From birth many live with some of the
worst outcomes of AIDS. Without any assistance, so many of these
children are forced onto the streets, are malnourished, have no
access to toys, books, teaching aids and a basic level of dental
care. For obvious reasons, some if not many, fall into petty theft
and drug abuse. By the time they enter government schooling at 7
years of age, they have little prospect of developing a normal life
course. |
 |
| |
| Break the Cycle Project has identified
the Knysna AIDS Council
(KAC) in
South Africa as a credible and reliable channel, and through them found
various child care programs. With small amounts of cash, we now can make
a huge amount of difference. |
|
| The town of Knysna is situated on the
South Coast of South Africa between George and Port Elizabeth. The
particular child care facilities we have identified are approximately
10kms north of Knysna in the centre of a densely populated black
township, generally known as Concordia. |
| |
| Knysna AIDS Council (KAC) is a
registered NGO (non-governmental organisation) that works with the South
African region of Knysna-Sedgefield-Plettenberg bay areas to combat the
devastating effects of HIV/AIDS. Although the council receives a small
amount of support from the Knysna Municipality and works closely with
the Department of Health, it depends heavily on volunteers and private
donors to help carry out its work. |
| |
 |
The KAC is involved in activities
such as HIV awareness and prevention workshops, condom distribution
and providing food, toys, clothing and other items to assist
families affected by HIV/AIDS. |
| |
| The purpose of this project is to
provide a basic feeding program to children utilising the NOMBULELO
and MAGDELANA projects associated with the KAC. As an extension to
this we are providing toothbrushes, toothpaste and toilet paper for
the children so that they may be able to brush their teeth once a
day and enjoy the same level of comfort and hygiene that so many of
us take for granted. |
| |
| The Nombulelo after-school care
centre and the Magdelana pre-primary school projects operate five
days a week and this feeding program provides for one basic meal per
child per day. |
